TYPES OF COUNSELLING SERVICES

There was a time when the work of counselling was carried out in the absence of a formal process of consultation. Giving some suggestions to someone based on human relations was considered counselling.

But the continuous growth of social, economic, educational complexities has gradually made the intellectual community of the world realize the fact that if the existence of individual, society, and nation is to be protected, if continuous and coordinated progress is to be made in all directions, then the problems faced by the person on the path of progress and development should be effectively solved.

And for this, due importance should be given to the processes of education, guidance, and counselling. The process of counselling was developed as a result of this experience. Today in many areas, different forms of counselling can be used with different goals in mind.

  1. Psychological Counselling
  2. W. White used the term psychological counselling. According to him,, psychological cognition refers to the variation of relatively similar activities. It is easier to write them negatively than in a predicative way.

Psychoanalysis, free from its specification activities, free association, interpretation, implantation, and dream-analysis, cannot be termed as those activities.

They do not use specific means like hypnosis, permanent synthesis, psychodrama, etc. they depend only on the conversation between the client and the doctor. This conversation can form question-and-answer discussion, reconstruction of history, or debate on current problems.

In psychological counselling, the counsellor is similar to a therapist and is considered a counselling therapist. Through normal conversation, the counselor helps the client express his suppressed desires, feelings, and emotions. Under this task, the counsellor provides necessary suggestions and information to the client and at the same time gives him hope, so that the client can express his problems and feelings with a continuous policy.

  1. Clinical Counselling

The word clinical refers to the method of studying a person in his unprecedented totality. Through this, special behaviours can be observed, and specific qualities can be assimilated. But the goal is to understand and help the individual.

In the field of clinical counselling, an effort is made to analyze the problem and suggest remedies for the problem. An important branch of psychology is clinical psychology which is concerned with knowledge and practice in helping a client who develops inappropriate behaviour in the course of adjustment and

  1. Marriage Counselling

Under marital counselling, opinions and suggestions are given, or assistance is given to the person for the selection of a suitable life partner. If the client is married, then he is given counselling to solve various problems related to married life. Families are often disintegrated at a very rapid rate. This is the reason why the great need for marital counselling is being felt within society.

  1. Student Counselling

Student counselling is related to the problem of the students, such as confusion on the selection of educational institutions, information related to the adjustment of study methods and selection of courses, etc., This counselling is related to the problem of the overall academic environment of the students.

The only difference between clinical counselling and student counselling is that under student counselling, the basic character of the student is educational. In this way, the use of education is directly related to the needs of the individual in the situation of personal contact. Thus student counselling deals with problems affecting academic life. Under this, education is used through personal contact, according to the needs of the individual.

  1. Vocational Counselling

Vocational counselling focuses on the problems that individuals or clients encounter in the course of choosing a profession or preparing for a business. Business counseling is concerned with the processes that focus on the problems of the client’s selection and preparation for occupation.

  1. Placement Counselling

Placement counselling helps the client in choosing a profession according to his aptitudes, attitudes, and abilities, that is, the types of position or work the client is qualified for and whose personality can get employment satisfaction, this type of occupation or planning counselling helps the client in getting job placement.

  1. Behavioural Counselling

Behavioral counselling is a type of counselling designed for patients struggling with unwanted behaviors, such as eating disorders, depression, or anxiety attacks. This method believed that a person’s behavior is influenced by his / her environment and that the situation will persist or become worse as long as the patient still interacts with the environment that reinforces or triggers it. The key to behavioral counselling lies in assessing and examining what the patient learned in the past because it can be unlearned if the behavior was learned. Behavioural counselors may use different types of counselling therapy to guide patients to a change in behaviour, but the desired result is the same.

  1. Humanistic Counselling

Every individual is unique and has room to grow both psychologically and emotionally; this assumption guides the humanistic type of counselling. Humanistic methods do not focus on life events. Rather, it examines how a patient experiences those events and, in turn, how those experiences impact and influence their feelings. The goal of this type of counselling is to help the individual become mindful of how they respond to life events as this can greatly affect their daily living. Humanistic counselors give arms to patients and help them develop skills that will assist and work them through their problems and find their own solutions.

While these types of counseling are the most popular, there’s another type that’s often employed by counselors. Client-centered counselling is another type that can be added to the list of top approaches. Client-centred counselling, which developed from humanistic counselling, is based on the belief that we all have the resources we need already within us to cope with life’s difficulties. This type of counseling sets the client as the expert of their feelings and thoughts, not the counselor. The counsellor’s job is to clarify what the patient is saying, neither to ask questions nor interpret anything for the patient.

Conclusion

Not only are there many diverse counseling specialties, but the places where the services of counselors are needed are just as diverse. Not all counselors work in clinical space or talk to patients on overstuffed leather couches. Some work in hospitals, private practices, and care facilities, while others practice in residential settings, educational institutions, religious groups, and even retail businesses.
