HOW TO GAIN CLARITY OF MIND
It happens to all of us, even the best thinkers and super high Intelligence Quotient group. There come times when we feel overwhelmed by several thoughts, all demanding our attention at the same time.
At times like this, our minds get clogged up, and we find it difficult to process information. Just like the RAM of a computer, our minds have a memory capacity that limits the level of processing they can do. When this capacity is reached, the mind gets saturated and in dire need of declutter.
Clarity of mind is essential attainment. The mind can only focus on one task at a time. Therefore, it becomes imperative that if we must get the best out of our minds, we have to find a way to get rid of the distractions that get in the way of our thoughts and plans.
Rightly, the many tasks we have to accomplish may be necessary— getting to work, taking out the trash, picking up the kids at school, studying, buying some groceries, showing up for your dance classes etc. Yes, they may be important, but they can also be draining if you don’t manage them properly. So how do you take care of your daily responsibilities and activities and still keep a clear head?
In this article, I made a list of 10 ways to debug your mind and get rid of the excess baggage so that you can think clearly.
- Take a time out
Rest! I repeat, rest! Find time to release the stress of the hassles of work and family by deliberately taking some rest. And the kind of rest I mean is not the kind that involves just doing nothing. If you’re resting while your mind is busy with thoughts and plans, then you’re not really resting. When taking a rest, your mind must be relieved of the duty of processing further information. This helps in decluttering. Put aside the remote control, and don’t be tempted to pick up your phone to check your email or update your Instagram page. The world won’t come to an end if you don’t make posts. OK?
- Physical Exercise
There is a relationship between your physical state and your state of mind. Exercise releases endorphins that make you feel good, freeing your mind from worries and improving your mood. While exercising, you’re practically transferring the bad energy from your mind to the gym or space where you’re keeping fit. Exercise enhances your physical and mental health and wellbeing. Whether jogging, dancing, aerobics or swimming, find the one that suits you and be committed to it.
- Practice meditation
During meditation, you deliberately fix your mind on a particular subject. Meditation gives you mental clarity and sharpness, helping you achieve mindfulness. To help you get the most out of your meditation, you need to find a quiet place, possibly where you will be alone. Also, setting a time frame is essential. Most importantly, be determined and consistent.
- Take vitamin B
Activated vitamin B 12 helps to revive mental energy, giving clarity. It goes further to boost your mood and memory when you take it. It lowers the risk of brain problems as one age. Deficiency in vitamin B 12 causes mental haziness, depressed mood, fatigue, among others.
- Prioritize your goals
A mental breakdown looms if we continue to give attention to any and every task that comes our way. You may want to be perceived as multitask guru by employers, colleagues or acquaintances, but trust me, you are not doing yourself and your mind any good.
Before the day begins, make it a habit to draw your to-do list in order of priority, starting from the most important to the least important. Then, ensure you follow it religiously, taking out any activity that may want to disrupt the plan. This way, you’ll be able to have the presence of mind and less mental fogginess.
- Consume sufficient food and water
Just as taking insufficient food and water is detrimental to our body system, so also is consuming excess food and water. Being overly gut-full can make the body restless and by extension, the mind unable to focus on the task at hand. Ensure you eat the much that will be just sufficient and drink when you’re thirsty.
- Guard your eyes and ears
If you want to keep your sanity and clarity of mind, be wary of what you see and hear, especially in the media. Radio, television and social media nowadays are consistently replete with the bad news that have the capacity to bug your mind and distort your thought process.
- Empty your trash
I don’t mean the garbage in your kitchen. I make reference to the negative thoughts that clog up your mind, enervating you until you’re unable to do anything positive. Fears, worries, anxiety, and pessimism sap the creative energy from your mind. Make it a habit to deliberately get rid of negative thoughts and ideas from your mind, while replacing them with positive ones. Release any form of hurt or grudges you may have against anyone from your mind. Debilitating thoughts hold you back, mentally and psychologically.
- Do what makes you happy
Find a fun activity to engage in, that will help you loosen up. Play video games, paint, play a music instrument, go hiking, sing, mow the lawn, and do anything that will serve as an outlet to release negative energy.
- Relish the good old memories
Find something to be grateful for at all times. Keep memories of good times spent with friends and family, hiking, vacationing, or doing some fun activity together at the top of your mind. Dig into your archive of pleasant memories of victory, success, love, and soothe your mind when it seems like your whole world is crashing.
Conclusion
Having clarity of mind is invaluable to achieving any meaningful progress in life. When you find out your mind is choked up by thoughts, follow the ideas I have given above to declutter your mind.
